SRTS programming at John Valenzuela Youth Center has been ongoing for years in partnership with the Ochoa Community School. The Ochoa/JVYC Bike Club has been an impactful part for the participants during the last several years. Students have gotten to know members of their community and explored the neighborhood during the bike club community rides.
The 2024-2025 bike club cohort participates in regular community rides and skill-building activities. BICAS Youth Education Coordinators lead weekly after-school bike club meetings at JVYC along with a couple of volunteers. The bike club participants have been enjoying weekly safety and bike handling skills, like using hand signals and performing a shoulder-check. As with previous years, the bike club leaders bring students on community friend trips to places like Verdugo Park, UA Garden Kitchen, and the Children’s Museum.
