Last semester, third-grader Tabitha Orido from Rio Vista Elementary School was one of 1028 third-grade students in Pima County who was visited by our partners at the Environmental Education Exchange to learn all about how walking and biking can be a fun and healthy way to safely get around. The Riders & Walkers program will be wrapping up its first full school year this Spring, and so far, teachers and students are loving it! Since the program was piloted last school year, teachers are sending glowing reviews, similar to this third-grade teacher whose classroom was visited last Fall:
“Students were really motivated and enjoyed the presentation very much!! I look forward to continuing this program as we have many students who walk and ride to school. Thank you!!”
After the presentation visit, students who complete and return a simple walking checklist with a grown-up are entered to win a raffle for a shiny new bicycle. Tabitha was ecstatic to be the lucky winner from last Fall semester. We want to give a special shout out to her teacher Mrs. Hervert who motivated all her students to go for a stroll with their family.
